El Campo, Texas
El Campo is conveniently located, has a rich history and is a great place to live and raise a family or start a business.
El Campo, Texas is located 65 miles SW of Houston and 50 miles NE of Victoria on US Hwy. 59. It is located at the intersection of Hwy. 59 and Hwy. 71. El Campo is the largest of two Wharton County cities situated on Hwy. 59. It is anticipated that when Hwy. 59 becomes Interstate 69 traffic and trade will increase in our area in concert with the population of our fair city.
El Campo was settled as a railroad camp named Prairie Switch in 1882. The name was changed to Pearl of the Prairie and even later changed by Mexican Cowboys to El Campo which, translated, means The Camp. El Campo, at that time, was the hub of a thriving cattle industry. It was surrounded by cattle ranches, four of which were The Brown Ranch, Texas Land and Cattle Company, Herder Ranch, and possibly the most well-known, The Pierce Ranch.
El Campo was incorporated in 1905 and has continued to be a hub for ranching and agriculture in Southeast Texas.
El Campo currently boasts a plethora of available real estate to support business and industrial growth with the infrastructure to support it. Our residential real estate runs the gamut of quaint country structures to opulent rural and city housing with plenty of city lots and rural acreage on which to build your dream home or your company headquarters.
El Campo has five banks, one savings and loan, a newspaper, radio station, hospital, seven dentists, two clinics, one nursing home and two veterinarians. We have a country club, tennis courts, swimming pools, a golf course and a wide variety of hunting and fishing opportunities.
We enjoy a wide variety of restaurants, churches, and parks and have a number of hotels and motels. See the Chamber of Commerce web site (information about transportation, tax structures and much more) and The City of El Campo web site for more detailed information about all of the above.
Schools are conveniently placed throughout the community. The Texas Education Agency has rated Myatt, Hutchins and ECMS as Exemplary campuses and Northside and ECHS as Recognized campuses for the 2002-2003 school year.
